Kim Robinson - Northfolk

Northfolk to me was one of those films that I didn't quite get. I understood the basic plot line of a new lake developing and that these people in this small town must leave in order for the lake to be created. Also, there were the men who were going around to each person making sure they moved. Then there is the boy Irwin and the group of ecentric people he meets. I've never figured out whether those people are real or not. However, Irwin is very sick and unable to travel far but in the movie he is trying to escape with this group of people and believing he is an angel. I think I'd have to watch the film again to figure out exactly what was happening in that half of the movie. The other half was based around these men that are trying to get the people out of town. They are promised that if they remove 65 people from the town they will receive 1.5 acres on this new lake. Also, they are given these new black cars for their services. I thought it was interesting that each of them kept these car scratch free and completely clean while living and driving in this rocky, dusty town. As we said in class it plays along with especially the American mind frame of trying to keep the new material things in our life perfect as long as possible. The other very memorable scene from the film was when the wife was re-buried on top of the hill with the mountains in the background. We've discussed it many of times already but if I was to choose one visual image from the film it would be that still moment. Like I've said before in another blog, the scene gives the feeling of how impermanent our life is compared to so many other things in this world, so we shouldn't worry about the little things (like scratches in our car).
