Long before it was actually determined that Erwin was an angel, I saw so many symbolic references that suggested this. I knew he was the angel from the start. The primary symbol in this film is the circle which surrounds Erwin all over the place and represents a halo. Circle + Light = Halo. The first shot of Erwin's face is faded out to the close up image of the gas burner being lit. This is when i knew he was an angel. The burner was circular in the center and his face was within this circle during the fade out. Then the burner is lit. Fire=light, circle=halo. Another outstanding symbol of a halo was the lamp on Erwin's bedside table. Shots often showed the lit lamp above his head as he lay in bed. Again, Halo. The last halo i saw was when he was in the run down house with the angels. As he was lying on the table so the angels could physically examine him, there was a chandelier above the table. Crystal reflects light and the circular chandelier represents a another halo.
There were other clues that allowed me to recognize Erwin's holy nature. First, he travels between our world and the world of the angels. The doorbell to the angels' house is stringed. When Erwin rings the doorbell, it is like he's playing a harp. He also provides white feathers out of nowhere. The movers, also seen as angels in their circle brimmed hats, carried a feather in these hats, thus linking Erwin to the term "Angel." The final clue is when Erwin was swinging outside. There was one shot where the camera angle was shooting upwards at him so only the blue sky was the back drop. This shots looks like we are looking up at Erwin flying in the sky.
