While I found Northfork rather confusing, there were several things that stood out to me symbolically. The town of Northfork is forcing its people to leave due to a new dam being built for recreational purposes. Not only are the men in suits running people away making Northfork a ghost town, but the dam is also going to take over an old graveyard that has been there for a very long time. To me the thought of a graveyard having no scared value is very disturbing. Every time I even pass a graveyard I like to think about how many people there are and what possibly these people did throughout their lifetime: the thought of these people just acting as if a graveyard weren’t even there is very dissatisfying to me. Although the one man did grab his wife’s casket, I somewhat see this as tampering with God’s property. I find it weird when people talk about moving caskets because I feel as if these people are at rest and shouldn’t be bothered. However, I also found it interesting that the body was being moved on top of a mountain which would bring the body closer to God.
Another symbol I found interesting was that the men trying to persuade people to move out of Northfork were paired in twos. This made me think of the story about Noah and the Ark and how he was able to get all animals to congregate on the ark in sets of two. These men were promised land if they were to inform people of the waters coming, and in a way the animals were promised land if they were to believe Noah and get on the ark with him. Another thing that stood out to me was the church that didn’t have a side to it. This can be interpreted several ways, but to me this made me think of welcoming God and people in general into the church. While I am very firm believer in faith and God, I find God other places rather than a church. To be hiking and seeing the beauties of the world I get a better feel of God’s creation rather than in a building. The wall not being connected to the church seemed as if a way for the church members to see the outside and what God has created for us here on this earth.
