Tim Powitz - How Cincinnatus Saved Rome
Last year for a history class I had to do a report on the Roman legend, Cincinnatus Saves Rome. Cincinnatus is the ideal citizen, which is the point. He is smart, strong, and a fantastic leader, but above all he his humble. He is a poor, lowly farmer who gave up his seat in the senate and thus his wealth. When Rome is under seige, the city's senators elect Cincinnatus to a temporary 6 month time span in order to save Rome. Cincinnatus leaves town with the remaining army, consisting of farmers and boys, and then defeats the oppressors. He returns home a hero, and seeing that his justice had been complete, he resigned dictatorship after only 16 days. Most leaders would have held onto and abused their power of dictor in order to keep it forever, but Cincinnatus shows us humility. I think in today's world, we all need to be humbled with what we've been blessed with.
