Kevin Dessimoz - External Reading 3
Oedipus Rex is an ancient tragedy in which Oedipus kills his father and marries his mother. As a child Oedipus is supposed to be put to death because Laius, his father, heard the oracle that he would die at the hands of his own son. Oedipus is not killed; however, he is rescued by a shepherd. Oedipus unknowingly returns home and fulfills the prophecy. One of the morals of the story is to let things happen as they should. Laius tried to avoid the prophecy, but it still came true. Perhaps, if he had raised Oedipus like a son he could have avoided the prophecy coming true.
