Jared Free “Faith in the NFL” 4/21/10

With the NFL draft set to begin Thursday night no prospect has been more scrutinized or speculated about his possible draft position than University of Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow. The latest criticism about the two time national champ and Heisman winning quarterback has nothing to do with his play on the field, however; rather, it’s about the faith he practices and tends to preach off of it.
In a league that embraces Christianity, whose players flaunt crosses tattooed on their bodies and wrapped around their necks, whose star athletes devote their dominating performances to God, Tebow may be a bit too ardent of a believer. Tebow’s evangelical Christianity and the mission of his father Bob Tebow’s evangelistic ministry in the Philippines which boasts fundamentalist interpretations of the Bible, have front office executives divided over a single player like never before.
Although Tebow rarely misses an opportunity to praise “his lord and savior Jesus Christ,” and although he often speaks openly about the blessings of his faith, he does so only to those who want to listen and never condemns those who do not. Tim Tebow has proven himself to be a man of tremendously high character, other than his unparalleled desire and ability to win the game, nothing else should matter when it comes to evaluating no. 15 for a job in the NFL.
