Jared Free “Thin Red Line” 4/21/10

“Thin Red Line” was a beautiful film; by far the most incredible visuals in a movie we’ve seen all semester. Just like the only other Terence Malik film I’ve ever seen, “New World 1607”, I’m glad I saw it; but only for the scenery and landscapes, the story itself was made me too uncomfortable to really enjoy the movie.
The battle scenes are terrifying; that any soldier could charge blindly up a hill knowing that he could be killed at any moment by an enemy he would never see is amazing. Most films display the horrors of war in fast paced battle scenes. For me, these scenes are usually so frantic that you don’t have time to really think and reflect about what you’re seeing. In “Thin Red Line”, though, the action is so sparse and spread out that the visuals of battle really sink in and leave you feeling depressed. For instance, I don’t know that any character dies in the film without suffering through at least a minute or two of dialogue about fear and pain; even for a guy who enjoys war movies, it was difficult to watch.
