Joe Pascale - White Fang
I recently read the classic "White Fang" by Jack London. I really enjoyed the book. For me, it tapped into the adventurous spirit that I harbor and I found myself longing to live the life of an 1890s gold miner in the far north. Yet there was one aspect of the book that irritated me. The book focuses on a wolf/dog mix (White Fang) and his adventures in life. Soon he finds himself a submissive creature to man. The book, written from White Fang's perspective, constantly refers to man as "God." This infers that all animals think of humans as Gods, because of their superior manipulation of all things, living and non-living. This was one part of the book I could not get past, it really did annoy me. But the message it told was a good one, a message of love. White Fang was severely mistreated at the hands of man, as a result he became a more ferocious animals than was his nature. But the love of one man was enough to redeem White Fang from vicious creature he had become.
