Kim Robinson - misc. #2
In the past few weeks I've been researching for the paper we have to write for the class so needless to say I've had ideas about the paper floating around. However, I have also recently been watching a lot of movies and realized a connection between my movie Stigmata and many others. Movies like Stigmata or Angels and Demons even the Davinci Code all have an underlying recurrent theme. Each of these movies in some way questions the churches power or shows how the Vatican uses their power to gain even more. In Stigmata this concept is very present. Between scenes of Cardinal Houseman saying there is no church in Bello Qunto even though there obviously is and him trying to kill Frankie so that the secret of the lost gospels don't come to light, the churches power is very much in question. In both Angels and Demons and the Davinci Code the underlying concept is that the Catholic Church is trying to hide things. I just though i was interesting that once I started looking for this concept just how prevelent in films it is. I'm not trying to say that the films are totally correct but even the most outlandish lies have some thread of truth in them. Film provides a medium for directors, screenwriters, and producers to get their thoughts and beliefs to millions. Even if they don't entirely believe what they are putting out, it opens the door to so many people. And I mean could it be true that the Vatican wants to keep the church at the forefront of Christian faith and symbology? I think it could. Like one of the lines from Angels and Demons "corporations tend to keep track of their holdings."
