Why Some Movies Never Make It - Lindsay Conad

I was wondering throughout the semester why some movies never make it big, and why others are so integral in the movie business. Relating it to religion, I would have to say that there must be a transcendental quality about the movies in order for them to be desirable. The reality of the film must relate to what could be or how to be something more than what is. Otto would suggest a good dose of trememdum and mysterium to collect interest, and maybe even fear of the movie, but the connection to those human emotions, I believe, are crucial to the desire to watch a movie. I've only watched a handful of movies I couldn't make it through, but I believe it was because it was not one that had any type of redeeming qualities. There was no learning of a lesson, no battle between the sacred and profane, no advancement from what was to what could be.
So many movies seem to consider all these things when they begin to cast and produce the movie, but so often individuals bypass the deeper meaning embedded in the movie itself. I believe this class has ruined me in regards to the mindless watching of movies, but has challenged me to look at the transcendental qualities of movies and really seek knowledge from the adventures of the characters.
