Outside reading #5(ChristmasPageantEver)--Meredith Elliott

One of my favorite Christmas books of all time is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Even though the first time I read this book was probably when I was in 3rd grade, I still find time just about every Christmas to read it even though I know how it will end. In a nutshell, the book is about the Herdman’s (a group of hellion kids) who are known in a negative way throughout the entire community. The Herdman’s all go to church one Sunday because they are told they are given snacks. Little do they know that they will be casted roles in the Christmas play. In this play they are able to get the “Christmas message” across in a very non-traditional way.
The Herdman’s are a very poor family and although they don’t get the gifts that the other children do on Christmas movie, they know the true meaning of Christmas after this experience. Every year my grandma’s church puts on a Christmas play in which all five of my little boy cousins hold a part in. The script is never the same, the parts are never held by the same people, and the words and actions that the “actors/actresses” say and do are never the things they are expected to. Having these five boys together is a handful in itself yet alone to see them act on stage. While they are not quite as wild as the Herdman’s they are still wild in my eyes. However, this makes me enjoy the Christmas play even more. They get to experience the excitement and innocence of Christmas all throughout the holidays and carry that excitement over to all the adults. They are what makes Christmas special to me now. It’s not about the presents and all the commercialized Christmas things anymore. It’s more about just being with family. It seems as if that is one of the only days my family can sit with each other and be thankful for everything that we have and realize the true reason we are able to experience all the great things we have.
There must be something special in the air around Christmas time because everything just is a little bit different, but in a good way. I think this is shown in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever as well.
