In the popular Marley and Me movie, John Grogan is quoted saying, “A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you yours.” I definitely agree with this quote in many ways. I believe I have one of the most beautiful dogs in the entire world. He is a 12 year old Golden Retriever and I will always think of him as the best dog ever. His name is Sydney and I named him after Hamden-Sydney College where my dad graduated from.
When I first got Sydney he was a very little puppy. The whole way to where he was I told my dad how badly I wanted a light colored Golden Retriever, not a dark one. When we got to the breeders, my dad was talking to the man and he was saying how nobody wanted a dark Golden Retriever so he didn’t know what he was going to do with him. What my dad didn’t know was that my mind had already changed and I had fallen in love with the dark one. I went home that day with a new puppy and later did I know one of my best friends. Dogs and animals in general work in very weird ways. They seem to know when something is wrong or when you’re very excited. I remember in particular when I went off to college I was very upset and not ready to start a new chapter in my life. While my dog still has lots of energy he came up to me and just sat there as if he was willing to watch me cry. It may sound silly, but I will never forget this moment I shared with Sydney.
As Sydney gets older I know the time we share is getting shorter and shorter. However, I am so thankful for the time we were able to spend together. He is truly a gift from God and we weren’t even meant to be paired together. Thank God I chose to go with the dark haired one. I will always remember him as my first dog and what a great one he is/was. A dog really is a man’s(or woman’s) best friend.
