I love the ABC family movie that come on a hundred times over the weekends. One weekend this semester they had a weekend of Julie Andrews and I got to watch Sound of Music a few times. I really like that show and I think it is a great example of how one can serve the Lord outside of the nunnery. Viewing this movie for the 11th or 12th time allowed me to see it in a different light.
This movie is very much a spiritual journey for Maria. She seems to be an awkward puzzle piece trying to find her fit in the world. As she ventures and stays faithful to her God, she challenges a stiff man to begin to enjoy the world once again. She uses her gift of music to bring beautiful sounds into the house once again, and she uses her sewing talent to make playclothes for the children. Her knack for motherliness comes into play and eventually wins the captain's heart and the adventures start anew!
I think this movie is also a healing journey for the captain. He has felt the pain of losing his wife and has barricaded himself in a hole of callousness. As Maria pushed his buttons he comes to find that it is ok for him to fall in love once again and experience the joy of living though with another soulmate.
The movie begs the question: Can one come ot be happy more than once? There are many people who have fallen in love and lost their loved ones and never been the same again. This case is proven wrong with the movie. I wonder if a statement was made in that regard when the movie first came out.
