The Transcendent in Reality TV - Lindsay Conrad
While I was running the other day I came across the Extreme MAkeover: Home Edition on TV at the gym and I wondered where the transcendent and spiritual/religious connection would be in reality TV. Most, if not all, reality TV is rather trashy and rarely (if ever) has any redeeming qualities. I'm not a huge TV watcher, but I have a respect for Ty's show where houses are built for deserving families. It's like a time when the concept of paying it forward pays you back by counting the good deeds you have done in order to benefit you and your family. I think the transcendent and the profane is all wrapped in making oneself or one's family/belongings better than it was before. For example, trading spouses is another TV show I see while running at the gym where the bad wives switch with the appreciated wives to create order, and What Not to Wear talks to "deserving" people and helps them change what they look like and their price range in clothing. Though one may reach a new level of "transcendence" they are trapped in the profane by focusing on objects of this world. So, does reality TV have any real spiritual value? I'm convinced the jury is still out.
