Emily Walker: Decalogue

1. This movie viewing was very interesting to me. The fact that the film maker wanted to show the absence of good and concern in the world. I understood how the movie related to the Biblical commandments in the first section of the film that we watched. When the man murdered and robbed the other man, it was easy to see the blatant evil that the writer wanted to portray. The purpose of Midrash is to make Biblical commandments accessible and relevant to modern times. This reminds me of the parables that Jesus told in the New Testament as well. Jesus told the parables to make Biblical concepts easier for people to understand. The film worked specifically as Midrash by putting the concepts into a form that we are used to. Media is something that has become familiar to everyone. Sometimes seeing things visually can help us grasp concepts that would be difficult to understand otherwise. This movie put a visual image to concepts many of us have known since childhood.
